Maisie Engle Wins WKRG Golden Apple

To say Maisie Engle was pleased to receive our Golden Apple Award would be an understatement.

But you know what else she’s excited about? Teaching her first graders all the things first graders need to know.

Engle said, “They are so funny, and they tell me the funniest things and we have so much fun and we laugh all the time. But on a more serious side, we do a lot of reading and starting from the beginning where they are sort of reading to all the way to the end where they are really reading is like the best thing ever.”

Engle has been teaching at Brietling for her entire teaching career—that’s about 5 years at this point. And she thinks teaching first-graders is exactly where she needs to be.

“Anytime I’m having a bad day I come in and they’re telling me about their favorite dinosaur or how they saw a snake in the road–I’m like, ok, this will be the best day ever–I’m in a good mood now,” she said.

Engle was nominated for the Golden Apple by her former student Amberleigh Derwin who is now in the third grade. Amberleigh said she nominated Ms. Engle because she’s funny.

Our congratulations to Maisie Engle and Breitling Elementary for a job well done.
